INFORMATION FOR GENERAL PRACTITIONERS
MENTAL HEALTH CARE PLANS

 

The Better Access initiative offers patients access to mental health services through Medicare.  Patients referred under a Mental Health Care Plan for focussed psychological strategies to an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker are able to access up to:

  • 10 individual sessions in a calendar year; and 

  • 10 group sessions in a calendar year.

I will provide a written report to the referring medical practitioner following the initial 6 sessions or on completion of the course of treatment.  If it is determined that the patient requires further treatment following the initial 6 sessions, the patient will need to obtain a new referral for additional sessions.  The patient may receive a further four sessions, to a maximum of 10 sessions per calendar year.

Patients can be referred for the following mental health diagnosis

  • Alcohol Use Disorder

  • Anxiety Disorders

  • Adjustment Disorders

  • Bereavement Disorders

  • Co-occurring anxiety and depression

  • Depression

  • Drug Use Disorder

  • Panic Disorders

  • Trauma and Stressor Related Disorders including PTSD
