INFORMATION FOR GENERAL PRACTITIONERS
MENTAL HEALTH CARE PLANS
The Better Access initiative offers patients access to mental health services through Medicare. Patients referred under a Mental Health Care Plan for focussed psychological strategies to an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker are able to access up to:
10 individual sessions in a calendar year; and
10 group sessions in a calendar year.
I will provide a written report to the referring medical practitioner following the initial 6 sessions or on completion of the course of treatment. If it is determined that the patient requires further treatment following the initial 6 sessions, the patient will need to obtain a new referral for additional sessions. The patient may receive a further four sessions, to a maximum of 10 sessions per calendar year.
Patients can be referred for the following mental health diagnosis
Alcohol Use Disorder
Co-occurring anxiety and depression
Drug Use Disorder
Trauma and Stressor Related Disorders including PTSD
